A Sleeping Forest

Synopsis:

When Minako (Nakayama Miho) was twelve, she lost both parents and older sister to a mysterious accident, the prime suspect a university student arrested and sentenced to prison for fifteen years. She also lost her memory, suffering from post traumatic stress and was raised, ignorant of the tragedy, by her grandparents. Now, at twenty-seven, though she hates her job, she is happy. Two days ago, however, the former university student was released, and almost coincidentally, Minako finds an old box filled with letters from an unknown boy asking to meet her in fifteen years.Until she one day opens a box filled with letters from an unknown boy asking her to meet him in her hometown forest in fifteen years. Even more coincidence, the date he writes is only two days away. Curious, Minako hurries to the meeting place (the forest of her childhood), wanting to solve he mystery he described to her - that fifteen years ago, something had happened, causing her to lose all memory of the night she lost of her family. When she enters the forest, Minako encounters a strange man sleeping in a hammock. He is Ito Naoki (Kimura Takuya), who wakes and tells her he knows everything she has done in the last fifteen years. He tells her that danger is coming, and she runs away, frightened.

Minako, of course, doesn't tell her fiance, Keiichiro (Nakamura Toru) what has happened. They are happy and are planning to get married on Christmas Eve. Ironically, this is the anniversary of the death of Minako's, though she does not know this. Despite her intentions to forget Naoki, however, he appears at the greenhouse where she works, and when she asks him what he wants, he says they cannot be separated because he is a part of her.

Mysterious things begin to happen, and when a bomb goes off in Minako's apartment, she confronts Naoki, who denies involvement. Then Minako begins to have flashbacks. When she asks Naoki if her family really died in a traffic accident, he refuses to respond, and she decides to find out for herself, bringing Keiichiro and herself to the forest where they meet the doctor who had treated her after the traumatic incident. Strangely enough, he is Naoki's father. He tells them that he hypnotised Minako fifteen years ago, replacing the bad memories she possessed with a few of his son's experiences. This is what Naoki had meant when he said he was a part of her. The doctor explains, however, that the memory transplant is only temporary. Her mind is like a sleeping forest that will eventually awake and shake away the seeds he planted.

After some investigation, Minako and Keiichiro learn that it was the convicted student that had first called the police to the murder scene. They also learn that while he was convicted, he never actually admitted to the crime. In fact, he never uttered a word, in a state of total shock during the entire trial. Minako wonders about this. She wonders why he didn't kill her when he obviously had a chance. Later, she has her answer. A flashback reveals her standing over family with a knife in her hand and blood on her chest. Is that why? Was she the one to kill her family?
